Hookah 101
Hookah Flavours 101: How to Pick Your Perfect Mix
"What flavour do you want?" is the first question at any hookah lounge, and if you're new to shisha it can feel like being handed a wine list in a language you don't read. The good news: a few simple concepts cover almost everything, and once you know them you can order confidently anywhere.
Start with strength, not flavour
Shisha tobacco comes in roughly three strength tiers, and this matters more than the flavour name on the jar:
- Light (blond leaf) — washed tobacco with low nicotine. Smooth, forgiving, ideal for beginners and long social sessions.
- Medium — noticeable body without being heavy. The sweet spot for most regular smokers.
- Strong (dark leaf) — unwashed leaf with high nicotine and a deep tobacco backbone. Order it only if you smoke regularly; on an empty stomach it will end your evening early.
Tell your hookah master your experience level and let them pick the brand. That single sentence — "I'm new, keep it light" or "I smoke often, make it punchy" — improves your session more than any flavour choice.
The flavour families
Citrus & fresh
Lemon, grapefruit, lime, mint. Bright, clean, endlessly drinkable — the gin and tonic of the shisha world. Perfect in summer and a great first hookah.
Berries
Raspberry, currant, blueberry, strawberry. Sweeter and rounder, and the base of many house mixes — including our own Smoky Ocean signature with blue curaçao in the flask.
Tropical
Pineapple, mango, passion fruit, coconut. Holiday flavours that pair naturally with fruit-head bowls, where the tobacco is packed into real fruit.
Classics & spice
Double apple, grape-mint, cinnamon. The traditional Eastern profiles — anise-heavy double apple is the single most iconic shisha flavour in the world. Try it at least once.
Dessert
Vanilla, caramel, pistachio, cream. Rich after-dinner flavours, best in cooler months and shorter sessions.
Classic bowl or fruit head?
A classic clay bowl gives the purest expression of the tobacco. A fruit-head bowl — grapefruit, pomegranate, pineapple or a whole watermelon — steams the tobacco in fruit juice, adding natural sweetness and moisture that makes the smoke noticeably softer. It costs more and takes longer to prepare, but for special occasions it's worth every euro. At Smoky Ocean, fruit bowls run from 50€ (grapefruit) to 70€ (double pineapple) — see the full hookah card.
What to drink with it
- Strong dark-leaf mixes → hot mint or author's tea. The classic pairing for a reason.
- Berry and citrus mixes → craft lemonade or a sour cocktail.
- Tropical fruit heads → piña colada territory — coconut and pineapple drinks amplify the bowl.
- Dessert flavours → coffee, Baileys or a White Russian.

Book a Table on WhatsApp See All Flavour OptionsThree rookie mistakes to avoid
- Ordering the strongest mix to look experienced. Nicotine doesn't care about your image. Build up over a few sessions.
- Mixing five flavours at once. Two, maximum three complementary flavours always beat a random fruit salad.
- Smoking on an empty stomach. Eat first, or at least order a dessert with your hookah — your evening will thank you.
Still unsure? That's literally what the hookah master is for. Describe what you like in food and drinks — sweet, sour, fresh, heavy — and a good master will translate it into the right bowl. Come test the theory at Smoky Ocean in Limassol, open every day from 13:00.
